THIS IS MOSAE ZAPPA ’23

Gary Lucas (25/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
A world class guitar hero, a Grammy-nominated songwriter, an international recording artist, and a soundtrack composer for film and television, Gary Lucas is our special guest for this years Mosae Zappa main event. The former Captain Beefheart guitarist has recorded over fifty acclaimed albums to date in his own right in a variety of genres—jazz, rock, classical, folk, blues, avant-garde and world music—and has received several Lifetime Achievement awards for his songwriting with Jeff Buckley and many honors. Lucas also performed and collaborated with a who’s who of musical luminaries, including Leonard Bernstein, Lou Reed, John Cale, Patti Smith, Chris Cornell, Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave and many others. At Mosae Zappa he will perform a solo set and while he’s there, you never know what’s going to happen…

Cheap Thrills (25/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
Cheap Thrills are a spectacular 11-piece Frank Zappa tribute band. This amazing collective (including a four piece brass section and marimba) has made a selection from the enormous oeuvre of the American composer/guitarist and bandleader, good for almost two hours of listening pleasure. For those who want to experience an unforgettable evening with music by the genius Zappa, Cheap Thrills is an absolute must, so prepare for a joyfull late night Frank Zappa party during their headline show at Mosae Zappa 2023.

Kameel (26/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
Kameel are an instrumental trio whose musicians earned their stripes with Buscemi, Yevgueni, Geike Arnaert and in national and international jazz formations. Kameel bridges the gap between the energy of Rock&Roll, the freedom of Jazz, room for experimentation and all this with respect for melody and composition. Five years after their furious set during Mosae Zappa’s summer event Holiday in Berlin, Kameel will be headlining the Mosae Zappa Sunday matinee.

The Wrong Object (25/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
Modern creative jazz-rock group the Wrong Object was founded in 2002 in Liege, Belgium by guitarist Michel Delville and began life as a Frank Zappa cover band before writing their own original and jaw-dropping music. Besides the work of Frank Zappa a number of other influences have informed the group’s direction, ranging from the jazzy side of England’s Canterbury scene à la Soft Machine and Gong to Béla Bartok, Squarepusher, Aka Moon, Charlie Mingus and Sonic Youth. They played at the very first Mosae Zappa festival in 2011 and became frequent guests. This year they’ll be back in Landgraaf after a five-year hiatus.

HBH ft. Jeff Hollie (26/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
HBH, short for Hollie, Beck, and Händl, is a captivating and innovative trio dedicated to the music of Frank Zappa. Formed in 2023, the ensemble is comprised of Zappa alumnus Jeff Hollie, saxophonist and vocalist who played on Joe’s Garage, Armin Beck on drums, and Fred Händl on piano. HBH embarked on a musical adventure that pays homage to the genius of Frank Zappa while infusing their own artistic expressions into the mix. With deep appreciation for Zappa’s eclectic compositions, they’ve carved out a niche in the scene of tribute bands.

Die Miserablen Hurensohne (24/11 Café Bluff Heerlen)
Die Miserablen Hurensohne play the music of Frank Zappa. What’s special about it? They provide the American composer’s songs with their own lyrics. Sometimes German, sometimes Hessian, sometimes in combination. The handsome Bobby Brown becomes Robbert Braun, the average Hessian who sweeps the streets on Saturdays… And there is also a lot to offer visually, for example colorful suits. What more do you want? Come by on Friday Night at the Mosae Zappa Kick Off and let them convince you.

Wolfbox (25/11 Oefenbunker Landgraaf)
The blues-influenced (Joe’s) garage rock duo Wolfbox are local heroes and rising stars in the underground scene. Sometimes laid back, mostly heavy, always bursting with energy, amazing technical skills and pleasure. And always trying to annoy the neighbours. Perfect for kickstarting the Mosae Zappa main event in de Oefenbunker!

Fred Händl (25/11 Outpoet Heerlen)
Fred Händl started playing the piano at an early age, taught by his father. Later he received private lessons and attended the Conservatory of Music in Tilburg. Then he switched instruments and played guitar/bass and trumpet in several punk and avant-garde bands in the early 90s. However, he soon turned back to the piano and in 1996 recorded his first album entitled “Moon and Stars and Moon and Stars and All That Jazz”. Today he has a successful piano practice in The Hague. As an avid fan of Frank Zappa’s music, Fred decided to make some arrangements for piano solo. Since 2015 he toured with Zappatika, Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra and Ike Willis and performed with Denny Walley, Ike Willis, Craig “Twister” Steward, Jeff Hollie and Ed Mann. Since 2020 Fred has been performing his “Zappa for Piano solo show” in the Netherlands and is touring twice a year solo mostly in the UK.

Remko Serban (25/11 Outpoet / Café Tess Heerlen)
Remko Serban is a musician par excellence. He has traveled throughout Europe with his acoustic guitar. Remko always knows how to set the right musical tone, whether this is a festival or a street performance, and a Remko Serban show is never complete without some decent Zappa tunes.

The Disco Boyz (24/11 Café Bluff Heerlen 25/11 Café Tess Heerlen)
The Mosae Zappa resident DJ’s The Disco Boyz are famous for their sets during the annual festival and it’s side events. They also shared the stage with Gong and MÖRGBL and recently performed at a variety of festivals in the south of Limburg. For all your Zappa tunes and loads of other weird shit. Leave their hair alone but you can kiss their combs.
